Pegasus Micrometeor Satellite

The Pegasus is a lesser-known spacecraft from the Apollo program. Launched three times on Saturn I rockets, the Pegasus investigated the micrometeoroid environment, providing data that would help mission planners protect the Apollo capsules during their flight.

The satellite remained connected to the upper stage of the Saturn I. The truss and expandable "wings" were folded up inside a boilerplate Apollo module. When the module was separated, the Pegasus's wings unfolded and exposed 116 detectors to space. These detectors measured impacts from micrometeoroids.
