GOES-U is the fourth GOES-R series satellite but has an instrument the others do not have: the Compact Coronagraph. This allows GOES-U to image the solar corona and detect coronal mass ejections like the one that hit us back in May. The current best instrument delivers imagery within 8 hours of a CME. CCOR can send back imagery within 30 minutes, significantly improving NOAA's space weather forecasting capabilities.
